How hard is hard enough?

Hey There,

Last week I was talking about how you may be wasting your time in the gym.  I also talked about intervals as the best way to achieve your FAT LOSS goals.  And I told you to push yourself.

But What does that mean: Push Yourself?  I say GO HARD!!  But How hard is hard enough.

Before you read further you have to ask yourself a question: What do you want?  If your answer is: "I just want to get a little workout in", then feel free to go at your own pace and finish the set.  But if your answer is: "I want to Feel Great and LOOK BETTER NAKED", then you have to step it up A LOT.  You have to Go all out every time and break through those limiting phrases of  "It's Hard" or The worst of them all: "I CAN'T".  It is meant to be hard your are supposed to feel like you are crushing it!!

At Pure Form PFT you will often hear me say "Push It", "Let's Go", "Bigger", "Deeper", "Stronger", "Give Me Everything You've Got", "Don't Stop"!  You hear that every day around here.  So how do you know if you are giving everything you have to the exercise and Going Bigger, Deeper, and Stronger?

This Clip says everything about giving YOUR BEST!

That clip is from Facing the giants and I have to say it is the most inspirational piece of video i have ever seen.

Simply Put, during the GO phase of an interval you should be pushing yourself as hard as you can. Period, end of story.  Well, not quite end of story. Again, how do you know when you are 'pushing yourself as hard as you can?'

I think it is easier for me to tell you how you know when you are NOT pushing it as HARD as you can.  First, if you feel like it is "do-able" then YOU have to step it up a bit.  And you do this by going a little deeper into the range of motion of the exercise, or making that BAND a little tighter, and going a little heavier then you Want to.  You should feel like you can barely make it through the round with only a few more reps to spare.

Second, and probably my biggest pet peeve, talking during the GO phase of the interval.  Straight up, if you are able to have a conversation during the Go phase of an interval you are wasting your time, if you want REAL results.  You should not be ABLE to talk if you are going hard enough.  Your lungs should be spending all of their time getting oxygen to the blood and feeding the muscles. And that can't happen when you are talking.

That doesn't mean you can't say anything during your workout but if you can say anything more than 2 - 3 words during a set then step it up a bit and Start working.  But it does mean that you need put into the workout what you want out of the workout.  If you only want to survive then you survive but if you want to give YOUR BEST to Look Better Naked then GO!

Check back on Thursday for a quick workout that will PUSH IT!
